Precast Arches

Humes’ precast arch system is a high-performance, cost-effective bridge solution with strong visual appeal, suited to a wide range of bridge and underpass applications.

The type of arch selected for each project depends on the required span, clearance envelope, transportability of units and the loadings imposed on the structure. Arch units are available with spans from 6m to 25m and heights up to 10m, with three arch types available to meet specific design requirements:

One-piece arch – Suitable for spans up to 12m and heights up to 4m

Two-piece arch – Ideal for larger envelopes, with spans from 15m to 21m and heights up to 7.5m

Three-pin arch – Designed for tunnels with heavy or complex loadings or where specific internal clearance criteria apply

The precast arch system typically comprises an arch unit, spandrel walls and wing walls, forming a complete structural and retaining solution:

Spandrel walls run parallel to the arch, retaining backfill at each end of the structure and enhancing appearance, with units available for spans from 6m to 21m

Wing walls are installed at each end of the spandrel walls to retain backfill, support the spandrel walls and act as retaining walls, with orientations tailored to suit site-specific requirements; each wing wall unit is approximately 2.5m wide

A bevelled end solution is also available as an alternative to traditional spandrel and wing wall arrangements

All elements can be supplied in conventional concrete or enhanced with a range of architectural finishes to suit project-specific design requirements.

Performance Benefits

Humes precast arch systems offer the following advantages:

Design versatility – Multiple arch types can be customised to suit most clearance envelopes, including sloped sites, curved alignments, rail impact requirements and skylight openings, with precast spandrel and wing walls available as part of a complete system

Fast installation – Precast units are quick to assemble without the need for formwork or scaffolding and are installed on simple strip footings

Impressive durability – Backfill and overfill protect the arch element, with all arches designed for a 100-year service life in accordance with AS5100

Minimal maintenance – Continuous pavements without joints eliminate bearings and expansion joints, reducing long-term maintenance and inspection requirements

Strong aesthetic value – Arches provide a naturally graceful form with a wide range of surface finishes available

No differential settlement – Precast arches do not require approach slabs at abutments

Architectural Finishes

Humes offers a range of architectural finishes that transform concrete structures into refined architectural outcomes. Finishes include traditional brick and stone textures as well as bespoke custom artwork, enhancing the visual quality of concrete infrastructure while maintaining durability and performance.
