HumeGard®
Gross Pollutant Trap (GPT) for Primary Stormwater Treatment
HumeGard® is a high-performance gross pollutant trap (GPT) designed to remove litter, coarse sediment and floating debris from stormwater runoff before it enters downstream waterways.
Engineered for durability, hydraulic efficiency and ease of maintenance, HumeGard® protects sensitive environments while supporting compliance with stormwater quality objectives across urban, transport and industrial catchments.
Proven Primary Treatment Performance
HumeGard® operates using physical screening, floatation and sedimentation processes to separate gross pollutants from stormwater flows.
The system incorporates:
- An upper bypass chamber to manage high flows
- A diversion mechanism (broad-crested weir or floating boom)
- A protected lower holding chamber for sediment and litter capture
During low to moderate flows, treatable water is diverted into the holding sump where sediment settles and buoyant litter is retained. During peak events, excess flows bypass without disturbing previously captured material — ensuring reliable pollutant retention even under high hydraulic loads.

Designed for Durability and Long Service Life
Manufactured from high-strength precast concrete, HumeGard® units are built to perform in demanding below-ground environments.
The system is:
- Structurally robust for installation beneath roads and trafficable areas
- Resistant to scour and re-suspension during high flow events
- Designed to maintain captured pollutants during bypass conditions
- Engineered for long-term performance with minimal operational complexity
Precast construction enables rapid installation, reduced on-site labour and consistent factory-controlled quality.
Safe and Surface-Based Maintenance
HumeGard® is designed for maintenance without confined space entry under normal operating conditions.
Routine servicing is typically performed via vacuum or eduction truck from the surface. Quarterly inspections during the first year establish the optimal cleaning frequency, with annual maintenance generally sufficient for most installations.
The HumeGard® GPT is a pollution control device that is specifically designed to remove gross pollutants and coarse sediments ≥ 150 micron from stormwater runoff.
Maintenance activities include:
- Removal of floating litter
- Vacuum extraction of sediment from the sump
- Inspection of the diversion boom or weir
- Cleaning of internal screens and chambers
Optional stainless steel baskets can be installed for interim litter removal between scheduled clean-outs.
By combining hydraulic reliability with practical maintenance access, HumeGard® supports lower whole-of-life costs and safer asset management.
Typical Applications
HumeGard® is suited to:
- Urban development stormwater systems
- Road and transport infrastructure
- Commercial and industrial catchments
- Council and municipal drainage networks
- Sites requiring primary gross pollutant removal prior to secondary treatment
Supporting Compliance and Environmental Protection
By intercepting litter and coarse sediment upstream, HumeGard® reduces pollutant loads entering wetlands, waterways and downstream treatment systems.
The system forms an effective first line of defence in integrated stormwater management strategies and can be paired with secondary treatment devices for enhanced water quality outcomes.
