Rail Solutions

Prestressed sleepers, turnout bearers and rail components manufactured for heavy haulage, mainline and high-speed rail applications across Australia.

Humes has been manufacturing prestressed and precast concrete sleepers and rail components since 1958, supplying major rail infrastructure projects across Australia. Our rail solutions support heavy haulage, mainline, secondary and high-speed networks with engineered products designed for durability, precision and long service life.

Turnout Bearers

Humes manufactures a comprehensive range of custom-designed turnout bearers to suit client-specific rail layouts and performance requirements. Configurations include conventional flat and canted bearers, tangential, diamond, crossover, scissor, single and double slip, dual gauge, catchpoint, flangeway running bearers and concrete cant-reducing bearers.

Each turnout set is produced to a unique design supplied by the client, with the number of bearers per set varying significantly depending on the complexity of the turnout — from small assemblies of around 10 bearers through to major sets exceeding 130 bearers.

Sleepers

With over 50 years of experience, Humes supplies prestressed and precast concrete railway sleepers for heavy haulage, mainline, secondary and high-speed track applications. The range includes standard, dual and narrow gauge formats, as well as specialised sleepers for grain lines, electrical systems, transponders, pedestrian crossings, transition zones and DED applications.

All sleepers are manufactured to meet stringent performance and durability requirements, ensuring reliable track support under high axle loads and demanding operational conditions.

Crossing Panels

Humes supplies precast level crossing panels for standard and narrow gauge tracks. These panels are designed for low-volume and low-speed applications such as rail yards and access tracks where traffic is required to stop before crossing. They are not recommended for use on public roads.

Crossing panels are supplied in modular 1,820mm lengths, allowing assemblies to be configured to the required crossing width. Each module comprises one inner panel and two outer panels, providing a practical and efficient installation solution.

Ballast Kerbs

Precast ballast kerbs are designed to retain ballast at the edge of box culvert rail bridges once the rail line is installed. The kerbs measure 150mm thick, with heights of either 450mm or 600mm, and are manufactured to suit the length of the supporting box culvert.

Each kerb incorporates drainage voids at the base and cast-in fixing points to allow secure bolting to kerb brackets, ensuring stability while maintaining effective drainage performance.
