Corrosion Protection for Sewerage System Components

Humes’ sewerage pipes and products are designed for a service life exceeding 100 years in accordance with AS/NZS 4058. To further enhance durability and manage corrosion in aggressive sewer environments, Humes offers a range of specialty variations and protective linings.

Increased Cover to Reinforcement

Additional concrete cover can be specified where limited information is available for detailed system analysis. Increasing cover beyond standard levels provides greater protection to reinforcement and can extend pipe service life by up to two times.

Calcareous Aggregate

Concrete manufactured using calcium-rich aggregates, such as limestone, improves resistance to acidic corrosion by slowing chemical attack. When used as a sacrificial layer, this approach can extend pipe life by up to two times.

Thermoplastic Lining Systems

Lining systems bridge surface discontinuities within pipes and structures, offering a key advantage over coating systems that rely on surface integrity. Humes supplies thermoplastic linings to protect against sulphide attack and corrosion in sewerage applications.

Plastiline® Lining

Plastiline® is a chemically inert, plasticised PVC lining mechanically fixed to the pipe during manufacture. Proven in Australian sewer networks for more than 45 years, it provides superior protection against internal chemical attack, is easy to weld, and is suitable for both precast and in-situ installations.

HDPE Lining

High-density polyethylene (HDPE) lining provides a durable, abrasion-resistant barrier against harsh chemical environments. Firmly anchored to the pipe wall, it is suitable for both precast and in-situ applications and is available in thicknesses from 2–5 mm, with light-coloured options to allow easy visual inspection.
