Background
Improving stormwater infrastructure with low-carbon, locally manufactured solutions
TMK Consulting Engineers, Fairland Group, TCM Nominees and Humes worked in close coordination to deliver stormwater infrastructure for the Vista residential development (Stage 4B-5) in Seaford Heights. Delivered through a multidisciplinary approach, TMK led the civil engineering design, Fairland oversaw the development to align stakeholders, and TCM Nominees managed civil construction with a focus on efficiency.
With a tight construction program and lead-time risks associated with interstate supply, Humes’ local manufacturing at its Pooraka facility, supported by early design engagement, helped keep the project on schedule while ensuring consistent quality, reliable delivery and alignment with sustainability requirements, contributing to long-term community value for the City of Onkaparinga.
Key Challenge
Performance on a tight schedule
The primary challenge was meeting the development’s tight completion schedule. With lead times under close scrutiny, competing options that relied on interstate freight introduced potential delay risk. Humes’ local manufacturing capability, supported by early engagement during design, enabled on-time supply and helped prevent disruptions to the program.
Humes Solution
Humes supplied a suite of HumeGard® units to support the project’s stormwater requirements:
- 3 × HumeGard® HG18
- 1 × HumeGard® HG27
- 1 × HumeGard® HG15
To maintain the schedule, the HG15 was produced using a HG18 mould, delivering a larger footprint at no additional cost. All units were manufactured using a 36% SCM FutureCast concrete mix, supporting sustainability requirements and reducing embodied carbon.
Manufacture & Installation
Despite multiple crane set-ups, three HumeGard® units were installed within a single day—demonstrating the simplicity and efficiency of the system and streamlined logistics to suit a time-sensitive program.
Outcome
Humes was selected for fast lead times, local content and engineering support. Strong collaboration across Humes’ Technical Sales, Production and Project teams helped deliver the project on schedule and to specification. The client noted the ease of installation and product reliability, highlighting the performance advantage of the system.
This project demonstrates Humes’ capability to deliver practical, sustainable and future-focused precast solutions for South Australian infrastructure and development projects.
