Box Culverts

Box culverts provide an efficient solution for instant bridging of waterways and drainage corridors. Humes precast concrete box culverts are well suited to challenging site conditions, with installation requiring minimal excavation and backfill. They are designed to withstand heavy wheel loads, even with little or no overfill.

Humes manufactures a comprehensive range of box culverts, with spans from 300mm to 6,600mm, in accordance with AS 1597 (Parts 1 and 2). Units are generally supplied in standard lengths of 1.2m and 2.4m, with custom designs available, including splayed units. Penetrations, post-tensioning ducts, openings and cast-in items such as ferrules can be readily incorporated.

Box culverts are available as either:

  • an inverted U installed on a concrete base foundation (crown type), or
  • a U-shaped trough with a lid (invert type).

Humes also designs and supplies precast bases and lids to suit individual culvert configurations.

Multiple box culverts can be installed together to form multi-cell structures. For installations of three cells or more, a Linkslab® unit provides a cost-effective solution by reducing the number of supports and increasing the effective waterway width. Linkslab® units are typically matched to the supporting culvert span, with wider spans available on request. Where fill depth is minimal, Linkslab® units can be designed to sit flush with the crown units.

Uniculvert® Modules

Humes manufactures Uniculvert® modules with the crown and base slab cast integrally, reducing site work and minimising construction time.
