Earth Retaining Walls
Humes provides a comprehensive range of precast earth retaining systems designed for infrastructure, transport and civil applications.
Solutions include the H-Wall® retaining wall system, modular L Walls and precast Wing Walls, each engineered to deliver structural reliability, installation efficiency and long-term durability across varied site conditions.
H-Wall® Retaining Wall System
The H-Wall® system is a standalone, interlocking mass gravity retaining wall suited to highly varied conditions, including vertical or battered configurations and sub-marine installations.
The system consists of two precast concrete panels connected by a cross beam to form a bin structure. This bin is filled with soil or granular material to achieve the required mass. A simple keying system allows individual units to interlock, providing additional stability without the need for straps or mechanical fasteners.
Unlike mechanically stabilised earth (MSE) structures, the H-Wall® system does not rely on corrosion-prone reinforcement straps for structural adequacy. Installation requires only basic fill compaction to achieve structural integrity. Minimal excavation is required, making the system particularly suited to constrained sites, busy traffic corridors and temporary works.

The H-Wall® system is available in sizes ranging from 1.22m to 6.1m deep and 1.2m to 4.8m wide.
L Walls
Humes L Walls are modular cantilever wall units designed for earth retaining applications. Standard units are engineered in accordance with AS 4678-2002: Earth Retaining Structures and are designed to accommodate live load surcharge conditions.
For applications outside the standard design envelope, special purpose wall units can be manufactured, including modified heights or customised shapes to meet specific client and site requirements.
L Walls provide a simple, durable and efficient retaining solution across transport, civil and industrial projects.
Wing Walls
Precast concrete Wing Walls are typically used adjacent to spandrel walls in precast arch installations, where they retain earth fill and provide structural support to the spandrel wall. Additional wing walls may also be used to retain fill and direct water flow.
Wing walls are supplied with integrated weep holes to relieve hydrostatic pressure and improve long-term performance.
Humes manufactures two wing wall configurations:
- Light Type, shaped as an inverted T
- Heavy Type, shaped as an L for higher load applications
These systems provide structural stability while reducing the need for in-situ construction and formwork.
